The NMCA West’s third race of the season brought thunderous racing action to Fontana’s Auto Club Dragway this past weekend. The Hedman Headers Nostalgic Street Car Class saw an exciting group of 17 drivers make the cut for Sunday’s eliminations. After battling it out for qualifying spots, Matt Loutsenhizer and his Ford would take the number one seed heading into round one.
This shot of Bob Hedman standing next to Wally Parks’ famous ’57 Savoy named “Suddenly” is one of the earliest and most famous photos from the Hedman Hedders archives. The guys over at the Hedman shop in Whittier, Calif. were lucky enough to witness this piece of history up close and personal during its stop at the facility this past weekend. A drag racing legend, Mr. Parks was also a huge advocate for Hedman Hedders in its early years. As the Founder, President and Chairman of the Board of the National Hot Rod Association, Wally was the driving force behind making drag racing a legitimate amateur and professional sport and we were honored to have the car for a few hours. The second race of the 2014 NMCA West season was a heck of a show, drawing large crowds to a special and rare outing at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona this past weekend. The Hedman Hedders Nostalgia Street Car class saw an action packed group of 33 drivers make the cut for Sunday’s eliminations with Kale Mallory snagging the number one spot after he battled his way to the top during an intense round of qualifying. The second race of the National Muscle Car Association’s NMCA West series drew hundreds of racers and muscle car fans to the historic Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, CA. Always the favorite venue of the season, the weekend was packed with full-throttle racing action and more than a few upsets. The Hedman Hedders Nostalgia Street Car class was once again one of the largest classes of the event, with 41 cars making the grid for the start of elimination racing on Sunday morning. Though the field was packed with seasoned veterans like Mike Nordahl (who won 3 Wallys in a single event last year), Ron De Hoop, Steve Cox, and Frank Coscarelli, stiff competition and some very determined racers would see many of these icons fall. The National Muscle Car Association’s NMCA West series has returned for 2013 providing racers with a fast-paced four race season at some of the most famous drag strips on the west coast. The season officially kicked off on April 5th with the NMCA West Street Car Nationals at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, CA. As the popularity of this series continues to grow, the competition gets tougher and tougher, especially in the Hedman Hedders Nostalgia Street Car index racing class. Once a year the Southern California classic, muscle car, and hot rod communities descend upon the Orange County Fairgrounds to attend the Cruisin’ for a Cure Charity Car Show. Benefitting the City of Hope Foundation and raising money to fund Prostate Cancer research, this car show is the largest charity classic/custom auto show in the world and had over 3,400 cars in attendance for 2012. But this car show is more than just a fundraiser; it is a place to celebrate the automotive lifestyle. To help embrace this lifestyle, the show has more than just the normal rows of parked cars. Weaving throughout the show grounds is a half-mile long “Cruisin’” route that allows owners to fire up their rides and take part in one of the staples of American car culture – cruising. The National Muscle Car Association’s NMCA West series returned for its third race of the season and was held at the SpeedWorld Drag Strip in Phoenix, Arizona September 21-23 2012. After Saturday’s qualifying session, Mike Nordahl was the top qualifier in the Hedman Hedders Nostalgia Street Car class, by far the largest class of the weekend.
